Armand D'Angour (University of Oxford)
Socrates and the Invention of Love

Abstract:
The prevailing image of Socrates is that of an ugly old philosopher who was unfairly put to death by Athens. But what was the young Socrates like, and why did he turn to philosophy? By assembling neglected sources for Socrates' earlier life one can discover a hitherto unsuspected biographical hinterland that features the strong presence of an extraordinary and influential woman, Aspasia of Miletus. This presentation will present the evidence and propose the startling but inescapable conclusions.

Biography:
Armand D'Angour is Professor of Classics at Oxford University. His YouTube presentations on ancient Greek music have reached more than a million viewers worldwide. His research focusses on the cultures of ancient Greece and Rome, including ancient Greek music and the biography of Socrates, the subject of his 2019 book Socrates in Love.
