Dear Friends of Classics and Ancient History at USYD,
We are happy to invite you to our next Classics and Ancient History/CCANESA research seminar for Semester 2, 2023.
Thursday, October 12th at 4pm (AEDT/UTC+11)
Frances Muecke (University of Sydney)
The Triumphator's Prayers: Towards a reception history.
Abstract
Descriptions, depictions and of imitations of the Roman triumph were ubiquitous in the early modern period, beginning in the mid-fifteenth century. Despite the considerable attention that has been paid to many facets of this topic, a curious detail has gone unnoticed — the prayers (taken as genuine) the triumphing general was supposed to have pronounced at the beginning and end of the ritual procession. I look into their mysterious origins and highlight some less predictable instances of their re-use over the centuries.
Presenter biography
Frances Muecke is an Honorary Senior Lecturer in Classics and Ancient History at the University of Sydney, a Fellow of the Australian Academy of the Humanities and a foreign member of the Accademia dell’ Arcadia (Galatea Beleminia), and is on the editorial boards of BMCR, Roma nel Rinascimento and the Journal of the Warburg and Courtauld Institutes. After working mainly on Greco-Roman comedy and Roman satire, she now concentrates on humanist scholarship in Rome in the mid-15th century, especially Biondo Flavio’s Roma triumphans, a ‘cultural history’ of Rome.
