Dear Friends of Classics and Ancient History,

We are delighted to invite you to number seven in our Classics and Ancient History/CCANESA research seminar series.

Thursday, October 5th at 4pm (AEDT/UTC+11)

Nelson Chen (University of Sydney).

Episcopal localism and management in southwestern Gaul in the Fifth Century CE.

Abstract:

The purpose of my presentation is to highlight the development of an episcopacy in southwestern Gaul, which was distinct from its counterparts elsewhere in southern Gaul. The emergence of a close-knit Aquitanian episcopacy comes from late-fourth-century doctrinal and theological disputes with the churches in Arles and southeastern dioceses. During the opening decades of fifth-century, I argue that in Aquitania and the west of Narbonensis Prima, bishops gradually assumed responsibility in local concerns such as dispute resolution and land administration. As the Goths settled in southwestern Gaul during the 410s, relations between Aquitanian bishops and Gothic leaders were one of collaboration rather than conflict.

Presenter biography:

Nelson Chen is a third-year PhD student - looking at the 'Constituencies' of provincial leadership in fifth-century Gaul. He has recently presented his research at the Late Antique Colloquium at ANU.
