Dear Friends of Classics and Ancient History,
We are delighted to invite you to our next Classics and Ancient History/CCANESA research seminar for Semester 2, 2023. Our program continues:
Thursday, September 7th at 4pm (AEST/UTC+10), CCANESA Boardroom, Level 4, Madsen Building (F09).
Marcus Ellis (University of Cambridge).
“An Assault on Tragedy? The End of Euripides’ Orestes.”
Abstract:
At the end of the eponymous play, Orestes appears on the roof of the Atreid palace for a final confrontation with Menelaus. In doing so, it is argued, he is occupying the role of the deus ex machina - and thus effectively establishing himself as an internal author and director of the play. This metatheatrical and metaliterary moment is revealed as a self-reflexive interrogation and deconstruction of the aesthetic and intellectual features of the Orestes and Euripidean tragedy more broadly, and indeed of tragedy itself. In turn, this illuminates the intimate interrelation of the play’s aesthetic and political concerns.
Presenter biography:
Marcus Ellis recently obtained his doctorate from the University of Cambridge, having previously completed his MA and MPhil there. Specialising in the aesthetic and intellectual dimensions of tragedy, his interests also encompass lyric, Presocratic philosophy, and Classical reception in fin-de-siècle German literature. He is delighted to hold the inaugural Ritchie Fellowship at Sydney.
