Dear Friends of Classics and Ancient History,
We are happy to invite you to our first Classics and Ancient History/CCANESA research seminar for Semester 2, 2023.
Our program recommences this
Thursday, August 10th at 4pm (AEST/UTC+10) with
Caitlin McMenamin (University of Sydney).
“Poison and Luxury in Livy’s Narrative of Roman Decline.”
Abstract:
In Livy’s history, poisoning is a symptom of moral decline exacerbated by the arrival of foreign luxury in 187 BCE (Livy 39.6.7-9). In his narrative of the following years, Livy describes extensive poisoning investigations in Rome and its surrounds, and the downfall of the court of King Philip V of Macedon, in which poisoning plays a critical role. It is in the same period that Cato the Elder becomes censor. I argue that Livy draws on Catonian rhetoric about poisoning and luxury to make poison a symbol of Roman decline. The exemplum of the offer to poison King Pyrrhus and the fall of the Macedonian court will be explored as case studies. The implication of this is a new understanding of Livy Praef. 9 (“vitia” and “remedia”).
