Dear Friends of Classics and Ancient History,

Due to planned industrial action, we have rescheduled our next seminar. Our program continues tomorrow on

Tuesday, March 7th (5pm, AEST UTC +11) with

Michael Zellmann-Rohrer (Freie Universität, Berlin).

Tradition and innovation in a Greek introduction to the astral sciences: The treatise P.Mich. inv. 1.

Please note once more the change to both time and date.

Please also note: this seminar will be on campus face-to-face in the CCANESA Boardroom, Level 4, Madsen Building (F09), Camperdown/Darlington campus. There is a zoom option but you are cordially invited to join us in person if possible. We’re very much hoping to restore the spirit of the seminars before the pandemic disrupted our lives and would love to see you there. The on-campus location will always be the CCANESA Boardroom, unless otherwise indicated.

Abstract:
P.Mich. inv. 1 (P.Mich. III 149), extensive remains of a papyrus bookroll from early Roman Egypt, was ranked by Otto Neugebauer and Henry Bartlett Van Hoesen as “one of the most interesting astrological papyri ever published.” Continuing work on a corpus of astrological papyri tends to confirm this assessment, despite the relatively scant attention devoted to the Michigan text since its most recent edition in 1935. This presentation offers a selection of the unique features of, and authorial ambitions behind this composition, among our earliest comprehensive introductions to the astral sciences in Greek, based on a new edition for the corpus.

Biography:
Michael Zellmann-Rohrer (BA Classics, Harvard, 2010; MA Classics, Berkeley, 2011; PhD Classics and Medieval Studies, Berkeley, 2016) is a material philologist whose research focuses on ancient religion and magic. Currently a member of the project ZODIAC – Ancient Astral Science in Transformation (Berlin), he also serves as an editor of the Supplementum Epigraphicum Graecum.
