Dear Friends of Classics and Ancient History,

Our final research seminar for 2022 will take place next week (international time differences noted below)
Thursday, the 10th of November at 4pm, (AEDT UTC/GMT +11) on Zoom only with
Demetra Kasimis (University of Chicago)

"The Intimacy of Conspiracy: Secret Plots, Democratic Breakdown, and the Reproductive Control of Women in Lysias 1."
Abstract:
Why should the loss of reproductive control over women get framed as a conspiracy against democracy? My reading of Lysias 1 considers the political significance of moicheiaas a sexual offense equivalent to the usurpation of a man’s oikos. Here the proper exchange of women in marriage, or its breakdown, poses not only an economic problem but also a threat to patriarchy and the practice of democracy that can only be understood in conspiratorial terms. If democratic equality is predicated on the economic and reproductive regulation of women, then the threat of stasis comes not simply from oligarchs but also from women.

About the presenter:
Demetra Kasimis is Associate Professor of Political Science at the University of Chicago, where she is also an associated member of the Department of Classics. She is the author of The Perpetual Immigrant and the Limits of Athenian Democracy (Cambridge, 2018) and various articles on such topics as gender and kinship and conspiracy and democratic instability.
