Dear Friends,
We are delighted to invite you to our first presentation in the Classics and Ancient History/CCANESA online research seminar series for Semester 2.
The seminar will take place on Thursday, the 11th of August at 4pm, (AEST UTC/GMT +10: on campus and on Zoom) with
David Rafferty (University of Adelaide).
"Coercion, Capital, and Hellenistic States."
Abstract:
Charles Tilly’s 1990 book Coercion, Capital, and European States AD 990-1990 had no small aim: to explain the past thousand years of European history. Tilly argued that European state formation was driven by the need to make war: as rulers encountered different social and economic conditions in different parts of the continent, so they needed to alter strategies to extract the necessary resources. This paper explores how Tilly’s framework can be adapted to understand the diversity of states in the Hellenistic Mediterranean. Ptolemies, Romans, Achaeans, Illyrians, Lycian poleis: all had to somehow find the means to survive in a multipolar anarchy, in very different social and economic conditions. I will look specifically at the polis as an administrative unit, at tax strikes as a form of bargaining, and at the fiscal importance of booty, especially in slaves.
