Dear Friends,

As we move into the final weeks of the teaching semester, our penultimate Classics and Ancient History/CCANESA online research seminar for Semester 1 will take place on

Thursday, May 26th at 4pm, (AEST UTC/GMT +10) with

Elke Nash (University of Auckland)

“Electra: a case study on unreconciled grief."

Abstract:
This paper considers the figure of Electra in the Choephoroi, suggesting that in her representation we might read her experience following the death and funeral of Agamemnon as one of unresolved grief, which would now be identified as a specific type of trauma that occurs when an individual is forced to process the loss of another entirely alone, cut off from their communities and the social structures that have been emplaced in order to prevent precisely that. Using Electra as a case study, this paper explores the impact of such unresolved loss on the individual, considering both its psychological effects and what it reflects about the position of that individual within their community/ies.

Bio:
Elke Nash is a limited-term Lecturer of Classics and Ancient History at the University of Auckland whose current research considers representations of timê and women in Attic tragedy; broadly speaking, she is interested in ideas of community – identity, relationships, values, formation, etc – and offers an unabashedly feminist approach to both research and teaching. This semester she is teaching ancient Greek at every level, a true delight.
