Dear CCANESA community,
We look forward to seeing you at our next Classics and Ancient History/CCANESA online research seminar for Semester 2, 2021. Please click this link to access the handout provided by our speaker, Jocelin Chan<https://protect-au.mimecast.com/s/k8NyCROND2uvANXgMiP2CK9?domain=t.e2ma.net>.<https://protect-au.mimecast.com/s/Ve8FCVARKgCxDM8PWuJylJX?domain=t.e2ma.net>
Our program continues on September 2nd at the NEW EARLIER TIME of 4pm (AEST UTC/GMT +10) with our own Jocelin Chan (University of Sydney).
Ms. Chan will present her paper: “Rocky Road: Roman roadbuilding as a journey of imperial consolidation”
Abstract:
In the process of building the Roman road network, what systems of knowledge were lost? In the process of studying Roman roadbuilding, what systems of knowledge do we as scholars overlook? In my paper, I will introduce my method for exploring the nexus between expansionism and roadbuilding. I will centre the concept of “epistemicide”, as coined by Bonaventura de Sousa Santos and extrapolated into a Roman context by Dan-el Padilla Peralta. This will inform my methodological approach to investigating how roadbuilding itself was an act of epistemicide.
