Dear Friends,
Remembering Professor Kevin Hargreaves Lee (1941-2001): Twenty years since his passing.
You are warmly invited to an online seminar hosted by the University of Sydney’s Classics and Ancient History Department and CCANESA.
On the 27th of May at 4pm for 4.15pm (AEST GMT +10), please join us for a special event remembering Professor Kevin H. Lee.
Professor Sheila Murnaghan (University of Pennsylvania) will join us for the Kevin Lee Memorial, and present her paper:
“The Singularity of the Tragic Day”
Abstract:
No form of literature is so closely identified with a particular span of time as tragedy is with the single fateful day. By the second half of the fifth century, tragedy’s association with the decisive day of consequential change was so strong that it served as a kind of signature for the genre, as can be seen in certain paratragic moments in comedy. Within tragedy itself, the single day was both embraced and, at times, critiqued and complicated, whether to acknowledge the artificiality of the tragic plot, or to reveal continuities of character or situation that resist temporal disruption, or to dramatize the stories of exceptional individuals who transcend normal human limits.
Remembering Kevin Hargreaves Lee
A graduate of the University of New South Wales, Kevin Lee completed his MA (1966) and PhD (1978) at the University of New England, where he obtained his first academic appointments. He served as Professor of Classics at the University of Canterbury, Christchurch, New Zealand, from 1979 until 1992, when he moved to the newly revived Chair of Classics at the University of Sydney. He soon became Head of the then School of Archaeology, Classics and Ancient History, and after that was absorbed into the School of Philosophical and Historical Inquiry served as Pro-Dean of the Faculty of Arts, working with the Dean, Professor Bettina Cass.
Kevin Lee was elected as a Fellow of the Australian Academy of the Humanities in November 1999, which established him as his native country's leading exponent of Classical Greek studies. Throughout his career Kevin promoted the study of Classics with untiring and unselfish energy, and at the time of his death was President of the Australian Society for Classical Studies.
Recognized internationally in the field of Greek tragedy, especially Euripides, his major publications include a commentary on Euripides, Troades (1976); a Teubner text of Euripides, Heracles (1988); a commentary on Euripides, Ion, with a translation (1997); Euripides, Selected Fragmentary Plays in two volumes, with M. Cropp and.C. Collard (1995, 2000); a commentary on Quintus of Smyrna, Book 5 (with A.W. James, 2000); and several jointly edited volumes.
