Dear Friends,
We would be delighted to see you at the next Classics and Ancient History/CCANESA online research seminar on the November 12th at 4pm for 4.15pm with Chris Mallan (UWA).
Dr Mallan will present his paper:
“Cassius Dio Among the Humanists.”
Abstract:
The fate of the text of Dio’s Roman History during the Byzantine middle ages has been a topic of much discussion in recent years. What is less well known is the history of the textual transmission of the Roman History at the end of the Byzantine period, when copies of work began circulating in Italy. This paper presents the results of a preliminary enquiry into the networks of scholars who were part of this process of transmission and translation of the Roman History and the ways in which they utilised and occasionally transformed Dio’s history according to the literary fashions and political contexts of the fifteenth century.
