PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The successful development of Australia’s growing RNA sector depends not
only on scientific and technical capability, but also on whether research
and innovation are conducted in ways the public and stakeholders regard as
trustworthy. This PhD project builds on calls from the public engagement
and ELSI (ethical, legal and social impacts of science) literatures to
involve members of the public in decision-making about science. It asks how
RNA research, development and innovation can demonstrate trustworthiness
and build social licence through practices of anticipation, reflexivity,
inclusion and responsiveness.
The candidate will undertake a qualitative research program combining a
scoping review, interviews with RNA researchers and policy makers,
deliberative dialogues with members of the public and other stakeholders,
and a multi-stakeholder workshop. These studies will inform the co-design
of a practical framework for trustworthy RNA research, development and
innovation in Australia.
PROJECT IMPACT
The project will bring responsible research and innovation into
conversation with Australian RNA research. It will generate evidence about
the conditions under which members of the public and stakeholders regard
RNA research as trustworthy, and produce a co-designed framework for
researchers, funders and policy makers. The candidate will develop
interdisciplinary expertise spanning social studies of science, qualitative
research and public engagement.
ELIGIBILITY
Would suit students with a strong academic background in social sciences,
science and technology studies, bioethics, public health, or related
fields. Experience with qualitative research, public engagement, policy
research or social dimensions of emerging technologies would be
advantageous.
Australian or New Zealand citizenship or permanent residency (or equivalent
visa status) is preferred; outstanding international applicants will be
considered.
Applicants must meet the University of Wollongong admission requirements
for the Doctor of Philosophy:
