Here is the abstract:

What are the stakes of construing philosophy as a profession? We'll examine an important phase in the history of the question: Plato's articulation of philosophy in terms of technē in the dialogues. The aim of the talk is to explain what this means, and then turn to critical evaluation. One upshot of his approach is that he carves out a legitimate sense of wisdom that has nothing to do with birth or divine inspiration. On the other hand, on his analysis philosophy turns out to be a specialized expertise, rather than a broadly accessible human vocation.

We hope to see you there!
