Tittle:
Making Space for Maternal Duties: Gendered Parental Duties and Demandingness
Abstract
Popular thinking about parental duties is (a) unhelpful and (b) deeply gendered. Popular expectations of mothers are excessively demanding. Although sometimes these excessively demanding expectations are applied to all parents, more often fathers’ duties are underestimated and taken to extend little beyond financial support, while non-binary parents are not even acknowledged. This raises two questions: First, how can we formulate an account of parental duties that responds appropriately to the interests of children and third parties without becoming over-demanding? Second, should our new moderate account of parental duties include any gendered duties i.e. maternal or paternal duties. In this talk, I focus on the second question. I will argue that we can (and should) retain distinctively maternal duties but that these distinctively maternal duties are somewhat odd.
Seminar s this Wed 19 August at 3.30 PM in Main Quad N494
