Doing Chinese Philosophy Analytically
This paper responds to a growing trend where top English-speaking journals are publishing work in Chinese Philosophy and more analytic philosophers have taken an interest in Chinese Philosophy. While many philosophers see this as a good thing – a move towards a decolonial, inclusive and global evolution of our field – there remains a background worry or scepticism that such attempts may unintentionally misrepresent or misunderstand Chinese Philosophy.
This paper provides a philosophical rather than a sociological analysis of this issue. It defends the idea that Chinese Philosophy can be studied faithfully and ethically through ‘Analytic Philosophy’ (broadly understood). This paper introduces and examines five things philosophers might mean when we say that we’re doing Chinese Philosophy analytically. It concludes by explaining why, despite our analysis, there may remain scepticism about doing Chinese Philosophy analytically. We will argue that we should take such scepticism seriously while maintaining that our main argument remains intact.
