Tue Apr 7 09:39:00 AEST 2026

The Centre for the History of Philosophy at the University of Notre Dame Australia warmly invites you to The State of Nature Symposium, an author‑meets‑critics event focused on Christopher Watkin’s new book: “The State of Nature and the Shaping of Modernity: Tracing the Roots of Colonialism, Secularity, and Ecology” (Cambridge University Press, 2025).

At this workshop, three leading scholars will offer critical reflections on Watkin’s book, followed by a response from the author and open discussion. The book examines how early modern accounts of the “state of nature” in Hobbes, Locke, and Rousseau continue to shape modern political, cultural, and ecological imaginaries, offering fresh insight into contemporary debates about colonialism, secularism, equality, and the environment.

1. Sandra Leonie Field (Monash)
2. Peter Harrison (of Notre Dame Australia)
3. Jessica Whyte (UNSW)
