Hi everyone,
This week's speaker in the University of Sydney Philosophy Seminar Series is Professor Daniel A. Bell (University of Hong Kong)
The title of the presentation is "Why Ancient Chinese Political Thought Matters: A Dialogue on China’s Past, Present, and Future". Here is a description of the presentation:
In this presentation, Professor Daniel Bell will discuss a chapter from his forthcoming book, Why Ancient Chinese Political Thought Matters. The chapter, titled “On the Morality of Warfare,” stages an imagined debate between two descendants of classical thinkers: Shang, representing the Legalist tradition of Shang Yang (played by Daniel Bell), and Meng, representing the Confucian moral philosophy of Mencius (played by Alex Lefebvre). Drawing inspiration from both the lively philosophical exchanges of the Tang dynasty and contemporary policy debates in Beijing, Bell uses this dialogue to explore how ancient ideas about morality, realism, and statecraft might illuminate the use of military power today—particularly in the fraught context of cross-strait relations between China and Taiwan.
The seminar will take place at 3:30pm on Wednesday Nov 5 in the Philosophy Seminar Room (N494).
Please note that this session will be filmed. Attendees are requested to arrive promptly at 3:30 pm.
