Abstract: Intellectualism about know-how claims (i) that knowing-how is reducible to propositional knowledge, and (ii) that when an agent manifests skill, she is guided by the propositional knowledge that constitutes her know-how. In recent decades, intellectualists have argued that their view aligns well with several important insights in the cognitive sciences: insights related to our best current models of memory systems, the volitional control we exercise over habitual and unreflective behaviours, and the features of motor representations. In this talk, I seek to undermine these claims. I argue that they all rest on an implausible characterisation about how skilled agents are “guided” by their grasp of factual knowledge. I also demonstrate that intellectualism is often advanced by its proponents as an explanatory hypothesis and argue that it cannot plausibly fulfil this role. I conclude that intellectualism about know-how offers an implausible account of sophisticated sensorimotor skills, and especially those implicated in unreflective behaviours.

Bio: Dr Ian Robertson is a Research Fellow at the Centre for Philosophy and Artificial Intelligence Research, Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg. His research interests intersect epistemology and the philosophy of cognitive science.
