Hi everyone,
Join us for our next SHE conversation series with Jochen Vollmann, hosted by Ainsley Newson!
Speaker
Professor Jochen Vollmann is Director of the Institute for Medical Ethics and History of Medicine, Ruhr−University Bochum, Germany. He is a physician and philosopher working in the field of medical ethics for 30 years. His research interests include end−of−life decision−making, informed consent and capacity assessment and clinical ethics consultation.
Abstract: Regulating Physician-Assisted Suicide Solely on Autonomy: The General Citizen’s Right to Assistance in Suicide in Germany
In Germany the Federal Constitutional Court has decided in 2020 that every citizen has the right of suicide and the right to get assistance in doing so based on the constitutional rights of freedom and autonomy. In opposite to most international regulation, e.g. in the US-state of Oregon, a medical diagnosis, limited life expectancy or severe suffering are no criteria, but solely the autonomous and free wish of the citizen. Currently the German Federal Parliament (Deutscher Bundestag) is working on a new legal regulation. In my presentation I will report about these new international developments and will discuss the pros and cons of a solely autonomy-based regulation of physician assisted suicide.
