*Lived experiences of loneliness in Autistic women*
The subjective and intersubjective experience of loneliness in Autism
remains poorly understood. This lack of insight is even more pronounced in
the case of Autistic women and girls, who are often un-, mis-, or
late-diagnosed due to the dominant male-based conception of Autism, despite
being at a higher risk for internalising conditions such as depression,
anxiety and suicidality.
Situated between phenomenological philosophy and the philosophy of
psychiatry and psychology, the DECRA project will help close this gap with
an in-depth study of the lived experiences of loneliness in Autistic women.
The project’s three aims are:
1. to characterise the lived experiences of loneliness in Autistic women
2. to determine what these experiences tell us about the distinctive
structure of subjectivity and intersubjectivity in Autism
3. to challenge the alienation and othering of Autistic women and
support wellbeing across the lifespan.
In achieving these aims, the project will conduct a qualitative interview
study with Autistic women and extensive philosophical research.
*About the scholarship*
Supervised by the project CI Dr Emily Hughes, the candidate will design a
PhD project that aligns with the project aims. The candidate may choose to:
- work with the CI on the qualitative interview study
- conduct their own qualitative research, or
- work purely with theoretical philosophical research.
Expertise in phenomenology and/or the philosophy of psychiatry and
psychology are preferred, but candidates with other specialities will be
considered.
Potential research topics include:
- lived experiences of alienation, estrangement and loneliness in
Autistic women
- lived experiences of belonging and connection in Autistic women
- the ontological structure of subjectivity and intersubjectivity in
Autism
- sense of self and other in Autism
- relationship between loneliness and depression, anxiety and
suicidality in Autism
- comparison of experiences of being different in Autism and
schizophrenia
- comparison between the experiences of early and late-diagnosed
Autistic women.
In line with the project aims, suitably qualified Autistic candidates are
particularly encouraged to apply.
*Availability*
The scholarship is available to candidates eligible to undertake a
three-year PhD program.
*Components*
The scholarship comprises:
- a tuition fee offset
- a living allowance stipend.
The value of the stipend scholarship is $38,500 per annum (full time,
