Dear Colleagues,
Macquarie University Ethics & Agency Research Centre will be organizing an interdisciplinary workshop on Institutional Gaslighting from 20-21 February 2025.
First Call for Papers
Workshop Abstract
Gaslighting is understood as a form of interpersonal abuse in which a perpetrator manipulates the victim’s own sense of experience by implying that they are overreacting, misinterpreting events, or being overly sensitive. Gaslighting has become a popular term in public discourse, but it has also attracted the attention of scholars who have sought to refine our understanding of what gaslighting is and how it operates. Philosophers have proposed that gaslighting does not only operate by questioning a victim’s rationality, but also by making them feel morally defective. Social scientists too have joined the debate, highlighting how gaslighting exploits and perpetuates existing structures of inequality and oppression such as sexism and racism.
Thinking about the relationship between processes and dynamics of gaslighting and broader structures of inequality therefore invites us to consider how gaslighting operates beyond the interpersonal level. In this workshop, we aim to consider the role of institutions and institutional processes in gaslighting individuals and groups from an interdisciplinary perspective, including but not limited to philosophy, social sciences, cultural studies, and law. We welcome theoretical, empirical, and conceptual contributions from scholars who have worked on gaslighting before or are interested in considering their work through the lens of gaslighting.
We invite papers that consider these and related concerns from a variety of disciplinary perspectives and methodological approaches. We also welcome scholars working on these questions in other geographical contexts in the Asia-Pacific and beyond. We aim to publish workshop papers as part of a special issue and therefore welcome original contributions to the workshop.
Professor Davina Cooper (King's College) will be the keynote speaker.
