Call for Abstracts: “Indigenous Knowledge Systems and AI” Workshop
26 November 2024, University of Johannesburg
The African Centre for Epistemology and Philosophy of Science (ACEPS<https://url.au.m.mimecastprotect.com/s/qud4CBNqjlCl9nJyqUzfPF263a8?domain=uj.ac.za>) at the University of Johannesburg invites academics to explore the intersection of Indigenous Knowledge Systems (IKS) and Artificial Intelligence (AI), focusing on how Indigenous knowledge can inform, critique, and enhance the development of AI technologies. Recent advances in AI have sparked global conversations about the ethical and social dimensions of these technologies, while Indigenous knowledge systems have received increasing attention for their potential to enrich our understanding of epistemology, ethics, and sustainability. This issue aims to bridge the gap between these fields, creating a platform for in-depth interdisciplinary dialogue between Global North and South scholars.
Themes (open but not limited to the following):
▪ How can Indigenous knowledge contribute to AI governance?
▪ What are the current risks that AI, digital and emerging technologies pose to Indigenousknowledge?
▪ What are the implications to Indigenous knowledge systems if Global North values and methodologies are prioritized in the construction of AI, digital and emerging technologies?
▪ How can we implement strategies to preserve or encourage the use of Indigenous Knowledge Systems on digital platforms?
▪ What kinds of social, epistemic and political injustices are caused by the marginalisation of Indigenous Knowledge Systems in Technological Spaces?
