Institutional Warriors: Karl Marx, Young Hegelianism, and the Concept of the State

UNSW Philosophy and the School of Humanities and Languages invite you to a seminar by Associate Professor Charles Barbour, School of Humanities and Communication Arts, Western Sydney University.

A well-established narrative suggests that the young Karl Marx initially belonged to, but then definitively broke with, a group of German intellectuals and journalists known as the Young Hegelians. But who were the Young Hegelians? And what aspects of their thought was Marx attracted to? The first part of this paper provides a synopsis of the enormous amount of recent research into Hegelianism during German Vormärz, or the period in German history immediately prior to the 1848 Revolutions. It shows that the Young Hegelians were not liberals, as the standard reading proposes, but radical and revolutionary republicans, and that they were not abstract or ineffectual theologians but deeply engaged political theologians and institutional warriors. The second part revisits the question of Marx’s relationship with Young Hegelianism. It focuses specifically on a manuscript known as Marx’s ‘Critique of Hegel’s Philosophy of Law’. And it argues that, while almost all contemporary Marx scholars treat this text as a rejection of the Young Hegelians and of the Young Hegelian theory of state in particular, it is better understood as a contribution to that movement and that theory. The way we approach this one moment in Marx’s career, I propose, has deep ramifications for the way we approach, not only his own intellectual development, but the history of Marxism and political theory more generally.

Charles Barbour

Charles Barbour is Associate Professor in the School of Humanities and Communication Arts and a School-based member of the Institute for Culture and Society at Western Sydney University, Sydney, Australia. His research spans the fields of contemporary political theory, philosophies of technology, and the intellectual history of the nineteenth century, with a specific focus on the young Marx and his contemporaries.
