Defining extremism turns out to be a tricky business. There are a host of
traits associated with extremism, e.g., intolerance, rigidity and
inflexibility, feelings of victimization, hate and anger towards particular
outgroups, displeasure and fear about the state of the world or the
direction it is headed, willingness to sacrifice oneself or others in the
name of one’s ideals. Definitional problems aside, one notable feature of
many extremist groups – from white supremacists to the alt-right – is the
allure of scientific explanations in reinforcing their views. From
biological essentialism to “natural” hierarchies, scientific findings are
sought out to add substance to extremist arguments. In this event, Tracy
Llanera and Louise Richardson-Self will help us explore the boundaries
between fact and fiction, science and pseudoscience.

This event is part of a mini-series exploring questions relating to
science, anti-science, and pseudoscience in our time. The series is
supported by the Challenging Pseudoscience group at the Royal Institution
in London with funding from the Open Society Foundations.

Tracy Llanera is Assistant Professor of Philosophy at the University of
Connecticut-Storrs. She works at the intersection of social and political
philosophy, philosophy of religion, feminist philosophy, and pragmatism,
specializing on the topics of nihilism, extremism, conversion, and the
politics of language and resilience. She is affiliated with the UConn Asian
and Asian American Studies Institute and the UConn Women’s, Gender, and
Sexuality Studies Program. Llanera is also a core member of Women Doing
Philosophy, a global feminist organization of Filipina philosophers.

Louise Richardson-Self is Senior Lecturer in Philosophy & Gender Studies
University of Tasmania. Her research interests include feminist theory,
embodiment, hate speech, and LGBTQ+ rights.
