Abstract: Broader audiences often misinterpret scientific information about the genetic causes of human traits (?genetic information?) in systematic ways, for instance, too deterministically. Such misinterpretations are thought to have undesirable consequences. So, the question arises: How to prevent misinterpretations of genetic information? According to one common proposal, a way to do this is to avoid using certain terms and expressions (?is genetically controlled?, ?genetically determined? etc.) when conveying genetic information and instead use terms and expressions that represent the scientific content of this information more accurately. I argue that such ?terminological swaps? are unlikely to be very effective if (1) linguistic interpretation is context sensitive (as it is) and (2) common misinterpretations of genetic information are partly explained by genetic essentialism (as they likely are).
