Title: Owning Our Attention
Abstract: Attention is a central commodity in modern times: social media companies like TikTok and Facebook take our attention as a product to be sold to interested buyers, and knowledge work -- such as that of architects and academics -- inevitably consumes our attentional resources. If attention is a good, how should we distribute it? In this talk, I argue that the centrality of attention in our lives implies strong self-ownership rights over our attentional resources. I then trace out the implications for the case of social media use, and further argue that the political philosophy of attention must recognise a new form of the tension between liberty and equality (or between liberty and need).
