Title: Neural Hardware for the Language of Thought
Abstract: The Language of Thought (LOT) hypothesis posits that at least some cognitive processes are explained by appropriate manipulation of language-like vehicles. Language-like vehicles do not process themselves; they are processed by appropriate hardware. Since the organ of cognition is the nervous system, whether language-like vehicles and the hardware needed to process them in accordance with LOT are available depends on how the brain works. We distinguish between different versions of LOT, articulate the software and hardware they require, and consider which if any versions of LOT are supported by neuroscientific evidence.
