Hi all,

Dr. Bryan Mukandi (UQ) will be giving a talk at the University of Wollongong this week, as part of the HSI Philosophy seminar series in the School of Humanities and Social Inquiry. All are welcome!

When: Friday, May 12th, 3:30pm – 5:00pm

Where: UOW Main Campus, Building 19, room 19.2072B (Research Hub)

Title: “Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow: Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o’s philosophy of history”

Abstract: History, Kwasi Konadu argues, is just one way of ‘knowing the past’ . He lists memory and tradition as alternatives. This distinction is my point of entry into a discussion of Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o’s approach to the past. While the Kenyan man of letters is among the founders of Postcolonial Studies, with the title of his book, Decolonising the Mind, frequently invoked; and while he is one of the founding figures of contemporary African literature, his theoretical contributions have to date not received the attention they deserve. My aim in this talk is to introduce the audience to a facet of continental African and Africana (the continental and the diaspora) philosophy, sharing some of the concerns, debates and approaches employed. After many twists and turns, the discussion will settle on what’s at stake in how we handle the past - an issue as pertinent to Australia as it is to Kenya.

Patrick
