Reading Marx All Over Again

Speaker: Professor Terrell Carver, University of Bristol, UK
Abstract
Marx has changed! And this isn’t merely cumulative, i.e. simply enlarging the archive and publishing more texts, though this has certainly occurred, with repercussions making their way through the scholarly world and political community. Moreover it isn’t new information coming through in new biographies that is making the difference, though the number of biographies, and on occasion their size, have both increased. And it is also not simply that politics has moved on, so Marx comes up in changing contexts that make him and his works look more or less relevant, hence the Marx-canon has shifted, more than once. Rather what will be making the biggest difference is this: reading practices have shifted, so how Marx looks and feels as a writer has, for some, changed quite radically. And just as radically, reception studies, for some, have shown how malleable ‘Marx’ is as a textual signifier. The disjunction between the textual ‘Marx’ who speaks to readers, and the formerly living Marx as he was politicking in the ‘everyday’, raises methodological questions applicable to theorising about and through great books, and otherwise. This talk will focus on:
The editorial politics and practice of making manuscript notebooks into published volumes: Economic and Philosophical Manuscripts, and The German Ideology.
The Marx-Engels relationship as a political construction and an interpretive device.
The structure of the Marx-Engels-Gesamtausgabe (MEGA) project as an act of intellectual violence.
Pushing back on Eurocentrism.
