LIFE WRITING AND THE HISTORY OF SCIENCE: A BIOGRAPHY OF SOPHIE DUCKER (1909-2004), REFUGEE AND PHYCOLOGIST

Abstract: Life writing is a popular form in the history of science for both authors and readers. Like all kinds of life writing, biography has challenges such as  a lack of sources or too many sources, but are there any that are specific to the history of science? Dr Sara Maroske, co-editor of Historical Records of Australian Science, discusses this question (and her responses to it) in the context of her biography of Prof. Sophie Ducker, a twentieth-century woman of privilege, and persecution, who found an academic home in Australia studying seaweeds and seagrasses.
