From m.michael at unsw.edu.au Mon Jul 11 08:49:58 2022 From: m.michael at unsw.edu.au (Michaelis Michael) Date: Sun, 10 Jul 2022 22:49:58 +0000 Subject: [SydPhil] Philosophy Seminar Series 2022,12th July 2022 In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: [UNSW] PHILOSOPHY SEMINAR SERIES 2022 All welcome to attend Knowledge and Understanding in Analytic Philosophy [https://protect-au.mimecast.com/s/UAIcCROND2ur8YJGDi9VHdJ?domain=hpsleeds.files.wordpress.com] Speaker: Prof. Helen Beebee, School of Philosophy, Religion and History of Science, University of Leeds Grant that pervasive and persistent peer disagreement undermines justification. If so, then ? individually and collectively ? we have very little philosophical knowledge, and the prospects for any radical turnaround in our epistemic fortunes don?t look good. And yet we have made a fair bit of progress over the last two and a half thousand years. So, what might our goal be, if we have indeed been making good progress and therefore should not think that our goal is knowledge? I claim that it?s understanding ? but of a radically non-factive kind. I?ve been a Professor of the Philosophy of Science at the University of Leeds since January; before that I was Samuel Hall Professor of Philosophy at the University of Manchester. I mostly work in metaphysics and the philosophy of science, but have recently completed a major project on David Lewis, including co-editing two hefty volumes of his correspondence.
