Dear All,

The Centre for Agency Values and Ethics at Macquarie University is hosting a two-day workshop on Poverty and Blame 7-8th July 2022.

The implications of poverty for theoretical work in moral psychology has been neglected. How do income status and welfare dependence shape how people living in poverty can exercise their agency and develop autonomy and self-control? What are the unequal ways in which poor people are held responsible and subject to blame for their perceived failures? Existing theories of moral responsibility and blame by philosophers hardly begin to address these questions, some of which call into question the foundations and assumptions of those theories.

The workshop aims to start new reflections on this topic. Day 1 brings together people with expertise from different disciplines and backgrounds, including people with knowledge about welfare, income management, Class identity, legal expertise, lived experiences of poverty and homelessness, and experience in activism and social change. There will be reflections on various intersections, including impacts on Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islander people; people with disabilities; people on the pension; and those subject to legal guardianship.

Building on key lessons from Day 1, the second day of the workshop will feature talks from philosophers aiming to engage with the theoretical implications of poverty for their research.

Further details are available on the CAVE events page<https://protect-au.mimecast.com/s/1r0yClx1NjioLlwXJhGe6Y7?domain=mq.edu.au>.

Registration for the workshop is free, although places are limited. To register, please email CAVE administrator Tom Montefiore arts.cave at mq.edu.au.
