From arts.cave at mq.edu.au Tue Jun 14 15:42:14 2022 From: arts.cave at mq.edu.au (Centre for Agency, Values, and Ethics) Date: Tue, 14 Jun 2022 05:42:14 +0000 Subject: [SydPhil] The Macquarie University Research Centre for Agency, Values and Ethics (CAVE) Seminar - Michael Mckenna - 'MORAL RESPONSIBILITY AND THE ATTENUATED ROLE OF THE HOSTILE EMOTIONS'. Message-ID: Hi all, You are invited to the next CAVE seminar where CAVE distinguished visitor Professor Michael McKenna will be presenting a talk titled 'MORAL RESPONSIBILITY AND THE ATTENUATED ROLE OF THE HOSTILE EMOTIONS'. Abstract: I argue for three points. First, the reactive attitudes are not essential to moral responsibility and more specifically to holding morally responsible by blaming. Second, the negative reactive attitudes involving moral anger need not be construed as objectionable because hostile or severe; they are consistent with expressions that are humane and dignified. Finally, one should endorse a stance of compassion as a corrective against excessively harsh treatment. This is consistent with morally justifiable expressions of negative reactive attitudes involving moral anger.
