The Logic and Religion Webinar, Jun 9 Message-ID: Dear Colleague, You are invited to participate in the next session of the Logic and Religion Webinar Series which will be held on Jun 9, 2022, at 4pm CET with the topic: IBN SINA & BOLZANO: TWO CONTINGENT ARGUMENTS Speaker: Kordula ?wi?torzecka (Cardinal Stefan Wyszy?ski University in Warsaw, Poland) and Micha? Paw?owski and Bartosz Wes?? (University of Warsaw, Poland). Chair: Marcin Trepczy?ski (University of Warsaw, Poland). Please register in advance! https://protect-au.mimecast.com/s/BNoICP7LAXf4ZXAj8U16wYy?domain=logicandreligion.com Abstract: In 2014, Petr Dvo??k put forward a hypothesis about structural convergence of two cosmological arguments: by Avicenna and Bolzano. Indeed, both arguments are based on the notion of the whole (totum) of all contingent/conditioned individuals, different from the notion of the classical set containing them. However, the authors differ in their attitude to the impossibility of regress ad infinitum. Our goal is to reconstruct Avicenna's argument on the basis of modern unitary theory of sets and individuals and compare this reconstruction with the Bolzano?s argument already expressed in the same formal frame. The lecture will be followed by the talk "God and Timeless Cognition", by Micha? Paw?owski and Bartosz Wes??, the winners of the second Kurt G?del Award 2021. But historical materialism is primarily concerned with praxis, not with natural philosophy. Marx does not address the practical philosophy of the atomists, especially Epicurus, other than in a few sporadic comments in his notebooks. In this paper, I will suggest that if we consider the relation between ethics and ontology in epicureanism, we will find a core similarity with the politics of historical materialism. Specifically, the epicurean conception of phronesis (or practical judgment) entails social agonism, echoing key Marxist concepts such as the class struggle. I will show how epicurean phronesis is a radical political concept in comparison to how phronesis is understood in the other major Greek schools of philosophy, such as the Platonists, the Aristotelians and the Stoics. This paper is a continuation of the argument about the epicurean providence of radical materialism in early modernity that I have developed in relation to Spinoza (Spinoza, the Epicurean, 2020), as well as of unacknowledged origins of continental philosophy in materialism (The Ruse of Techne: Heidegger's Magical Materialism, forthcoming). - - - - - - - - - Dimitris Vardoulakis Western Sydney University School of Humanities and Communication Arts Bankstown Campus, 1.1.70 Locked Bag 1797 Penrith, NSW 2751 AUSTRALIA tel: +61 2 9772 6808 Chair of the Australasian Society for Continental Philosophy: https://protect-au.mimecast.com/s/YIfkCL7EwMfPXONM8IBFwY0?domain=ascp.org.au https://protect-au.mimecast.com/s/yfefCMwGxOt598xVmTkfN2N?domain=philpeople.org www.edinburghuniversitypress.com/series-incitements -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
