Register here Professor Alastair Blanshard (The University of Queensland) Were the ancient Athenians ever lonely? The issues around loneliness and social isolation are amongst the most pressing problems facing modern society. In this paper, I ask the question 'Does loneliness have a history? And if so, how might we write it?' In attempting to answer this question, I focus on a curious absence in our record. Namely, the seeming absence of loneliness in our records for Classical Athens. This papers examines why loneliness might be so rare in ancient Athens and what the implications of this might be for modern society. The paper also considers the implications of the scarcity of 'alone time' in Athens and how this impacts on the nature of society, the representation of intellectual pursuits, and the aesthetics of divine revelation. All are welcome to participate. The speaker will be Katie Steele (ANU). Please find more details about the talk and the Zoom link below.----------Moral Uncertainty, Noncognitivism, and the Multi-Objective StoryKatie Steele (ANU, with Pamela Robinson)Abstract. We sometimes seem to face fundamental moral uncertainty, i.e., uncertainty about what is morally good or right that cannot be reduced to ordinary descriptive uncertainty. This phenomenon raises a puzzle for noncognitivism, according to which moral thought involves desire-like attitudes as opposed to belief-like attitudes. Can a state of moral uncertainty really be a noncognitivist state? So far, noncognitivists have not been able to offer a completely satisfactory account of it. Here, we argue that noncognitivists should exploit the formal analogue between moral uncertainty and moral multi-objective decision problems. Our ?multi-objective story? enables noncognitivists to save our moral uncertainty thought and talk by explaining how the underlying phenomenon could be noncognitivist. ----------Michael Nielsen is inviting you to a scheduled Zoom meeting. The Case of Social and Personality Psychology How a field responds when its credibility comes under serious threat is an important marker of its commitment to scientific values. The 2010s were a turbulent decade for the field of social and personality psychology. Failures to replicate, fraud, and evidence of questionable research practices all contributed to a crisis of credibility. What has the field done in response to this crisis, and what would a true reckoning with this crisis look like? I first discuss how the field's response to the crisis unfolded, from my perspective as a researcher, journal editor, and board member of several professional societies in the field. I then discuss what the field could do to establish its credibility. I propose two markers of a commitment to self-correction. First, we should undertake careful metascientific studies of the field and change our norms and practices to address any problems identified. I describe one such study, my lab's Surveying the Past and Present State of Published Studies in Social and Personality Psychology (SPPSPSSPP) study. Second, we should examine why our quality control mechanisms - namely, peer review - failed to prevent such a crisis, and what should be done to improve quality control and reduce the chances of future catastrophes. I describe several developments in peer review that may help. Copyright ? *2016* *HPS, All rights reserved. Want to change how you receive these emails?
