Our speaker will be Louise Richardson-Self. Please find more details about the talk and the Zoom link below.-------------------Louise Richardson-Self (UTAS)Images of CyberspaceAbstract. If we want to understand the social imaginary that structures a particular environment, we can start by analysing the images that get repeatedly circulated therein. I am interested in which images of cyberspace get circulated by us and what we can learn from them. Four prominent images are: cyberspace as "public sphere"; cyberspace as "free"; cyberspace with a "dark side"; and cyberspace "above" the law. Two of these may be cast as utopian imaginings, the others dystopian. But what they all share is a specific image of the "basic" digital subject: a disembodied mind. I unpack these images and consider the impact they have in light of the ongoing oppression of women.-------------------michael.nielsen at sydney.edu.au is inviting you to a scheduled Zoom meeting. The central idea of his technical work was that probabilistic arguments were a kind of logic. That led him to an account of why induction is rational and an attack on the "irrationalism" of leading philosophers of science such as Popper and Kuhn. In later life his controversial opinions on the intellectual (in)equality of women and the defects of Darwinian theory created trouble. This paper argues blame also has the function of sanctioning wrongdoers, and that blame?s dual role in upholding norms among conditional co-operators allows us to provide a unified explanation for why many kinds of blame are objectionable?what I call pathologies of blame. These include harsh blame, trigger-happy blame, moralising blame, feeble blame, inconsistent blame, meddlesome blame, hypocritical blame, and virtue signalling blame. Allowing any of these to become standard practice threatens the very valuable norms we care about, and which appropriate blame plays a crucial role maintaining.------------------michael.nielsen at sydney.edu.au is inviting you to a scheduled Zoom meeting.
