‘Ghost signs’ are a real phenomenon but also a useful metaphor. We frame our discussion of the origins of the history and philosophy of science (HPS) in Sydney within this metaphor. Our particular focus is Ilse Rosenthal-Schneider, a physicist, philosopher and German refugee who, in the late 1930s, brought to Sydney pressing concerns about the relationship between science, society and philosophy. There are several grounds for believing that she initiated the study of HPS on this campus. We explore both the social and intellectual contexts of her HPS contributions, then place Rosenthal-Schneider’s story in the wider context of the history of women in science and philosophy so as to raise questions about why she and her ideas have become almost invisible to current understanding of the origins of HPS.
