Subject: [SydPhil] CFP: Australasian Postgraduate Philosophy Conference 2020

The Australasian Postgraduate Philosophy Conference (APPC) is an annual conference that provides an opportunity for postgraduate philosophy students to present their work, debate their ideas, receive feedback from peers and form collaborations across institutions.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2020 APPC will be conducted online via Zoom. We decided that this would be the best way of ensuring that many people can participate without compromising public health.

The conference environment is laid back and is a great introduction to conferences for new graduate students. We encourage and welcome submissions from postgraduate philosophy students at all levels. Any interested persons are welcome to attend.

The call for papers is now open; and will close on 31 July 2020.

For art has to leave reality, it has to raise itself bodily above necessity and neediness; for art is the daughter of freedom, and it requires its prescriptions and rules to be furnished by the necessity of spirits and not by that of matter. But in our day it is necessity, neediness, that prevails, and bends a degraded humanity under its iron yoke. Utility is the great idol of the time, to which all powers do homage and all subjects are subservient. In this great balance of utility, the spiritual service of art has no weight, and, deprived of all encouragement, it vanishes from the noisy Vanity Fair of our time. (F. Schiller. The Philosophy of Music Study Group (Sydney Conservatorium) meets next on April 23, 6pm on Zoom.
In 2020 the discussion will focus on Beethoven and Philosophy. Semester 1 dates and topics are:
