Shifting the discussion away from the controversial comparison with transgender, speakers will deconstruct the idea of transraciality, asking whether it has any value when it comes to understanding processes of racialisation, the politics of racial assignment and the role of diversity and inclusion in society. Key questions include: * What is ?transrace?? * Are claims of transraciality new, or is this merely a new term for an old concept? * Is it ethical to attempt to change one?s ?race?, whether through social and psychological transformation or through physical alteration? Is it possible? * Do the answers to these questions depend on which group one wishes to transition from and to, or on the motivations of the particular individual? * Does the concept of ?transrace? problematise racial classification, or does it reify race? * What are the ethical duties of people that are read as ?racially? ambiguous? * What is the relationship between ?transrace? and ?passing?? * What role does ethnicity play in claims of transraciality? * How can the social justice interests of affirmative action and reparations programs be balanced with the dignity interests of individuals who wish to self-classify? * What are the differences between the North American and the Australian context when it comes to the politics of racialisation and the question of identity choice? However, theorists of collectives' moral agency tend to take a functionalist approach, on which collectives are moral agents in much the same way as complicated robots. This is puzzling: we do not hold robots blameworthy when they do harm. I suggest we don't hold robots blameworthy because robots cannot grasp their own agency from the first-personal standpoint. This raises the question of how collective agents can grasp their own agency. I give an account of how collectives can do this, so as to vindicate our social-political practice of blaming collectives. These programs have received heavy criticism, particularly from invasive species sceptics based in the USA and Europe. I aim to clarify and address the strongest argument that has emerged in the recent literature. Invasive species sceptics argue that the control of invasive species is a form of xenophobia, there is no sound reason to control invasive species or even prefer native species over non-natives. Preferences for natives are just prejudice, a prejudice not always held by the layperson. The public often shows affection to our alien compatriots; for example, the public support for Brumbies in Snowy Mountains, or the wish to preserve deer in New Zealand to maintain deer hunting. Critics of invasion biology have argued that invasive species do not destroy ecosystems but instead create ?novel ecosystems?. These novel ecosystems are claimed to be more biodiverse than extant ecosystems and across the globe most local ecosystem patches have increased in biodiversity! These more biodiverse ecosystems will provide more ecosystem services than extant ecosystems and, therefore, are more valuable. This position is only possible with the following assumptions about how we justify conservation. First, public interest or opinion should determine our stance towards the control of species. Second, the direct monetary value of ecosystem services is the only justification for conservation past public interest. Third, biodiversity can be flexibly defined. Four, the analogy with xenophobia in human migration is sufficient to reject invasion science. I reject all these assumptions. Once we see that there is more to conservation then opinion and immediate monetary gains, we can see that such slippery stances defending invasive species are not justified When: Thu 28 Nov 2019 15:00 ? 16:30 Eastern Australia Time - Sydney Calendar: Current Projects Who: * kristiemiller4 at gmail.com- creator Event details: https://protect-au.mimecast.com/s/ou7HCWLJY7i7VwYwc6N2_a?domain=google.com Invitation from Google Calendar: https://protect-au.mimecast.com/s/ETt9CXLKZoivW7N7cV9QPv?domain=google.com You are receiving this email at the account sydphil at arts.usyd.edu.au because you are subscribed for notifications on calendar Current Projects.
