Relational hedonism: When pain is out of place



The orthodox view is that pain is bad for nonrelational reasons, that is,  
for reasons intrinsic to the experience of the sufferer. In this paper I  
make the case for the relational significance of the badness of pain.  
Drawing upon Helm’s (2010) theory of caring, I suggest that the badness of  
pain extends to how one’s life story is interpreted by others.
