From J.Hadley at westernsydney.edu.au Mon Jul 29 10:24:03 2019 From: J.Hadley at westernsydney.edu.au (John Hadley) Date: Mon, 29 Jul 2019 00:24:03 +0000 Subject: [SydPhil] Philosophy @ Western Sydney seminar Message-ID: Andrew Benjamin (UTS) - Potentially, Relationality and the Problem of Actualisation This lecture forms part of a project to rethink the concerns of political theology. The lecture seeks to integrate that thinking into the development of a philosophy of life in which life is defined in relation to the law. A defining element of the position advanced is that there has always been a tradition within both the history of philosophy and theology that has maintained the centrality of the political by retaining the primacy of law whilst not differentiating law and life. The important question is: can there be a thinking of the political that is not a concomitant thinking of the law? Andrew Benjamin is currently Distinguished Professor of Architectural Theory at the University of Technology, Sydney and Anniversary Professor of Philosophy and the Humanities at Kingston University London. His recent publications include: Towards a Relational Ontology. Philosophy's Other Possibility. SUNY Press. (2015). Art's Philosophical Work. Rowman and Littlefield. (2015) and Virtue in Being. SUNY Press. (2016). He has published over 35 authored and edited volumes and has written over 200 book chapters and academic articles. He is Fellow of the Australian Academy of the Humanities. The systematic lack of understanding in which I am interested is plausibly manifested in the extreme political polarization that we see in the twenty-first century. But it is also plausibly manifested is less extreme forms even within loving relationships. My goal in the talk is to offer a rationalizing explanation of one way in which such mutual misunderstandings can manifest ? one that makes intelligible how even loving and well-meaning people can fail to fully understand one another. The key ingredient in this explanation is an account of a novel and underappreciated kind of silencing. -- Sebastian Sequoiah-Grayson Lecturer in Logic, Epistemology, and Metaphysics Postgraduate Study Advisor Department of Philosophy Main Quad A14, University of Sydney NSW 2006, Australia Homepage: *https://protect-au.mimecast.com/s/6GR5C91ZkQt6JLjBFEuK4S?domain=logicalrockpools.com * -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
