Speaker: Dr. Melissa Merritt (Philosophy, UNSW) Abstract: Stoic philosophers famously held that a wise or virtuous person is free of emotion (apath?s), because emotions (path?) are expressions of deep confusion about what is and is not genuinely valuable. This theory is often caricatured, and has (to put it mildly) met with no shortage of criticism. My aim is to examine the theory and its underlying psychological commitments in a charitable light, and open up discussion about whether Stoic apatheia is something we ought to strive for. I examine how this question is answered if various views of the moral status of fetuses are true. I argue that on some of these views, the choice whether to abort does indeed raise the non-identity problem. It follows that abortion is sometimes morally required, and that, surprisingly, sometimes one is morally required to kill a being *for its own sake*, even though killing it would be worse for it than allowing it to continue to live.
