Title: The conceptual case against the phenomenal object view

Abstract: The phenomenal object view is roughly the view that ordinary  
objects, when perceived, figure in the phenomenal character of that  
perception. This view, which was once almost universally rejected, has  
become very popular since the turn of the century: it is a commitment of  
standard naïve realist views, and it can even be adopted by  
representationalists. In this paper, I offer a new argument against the  
phenomenal object view. The central premise of my argument is an  
explication of the very concept of phenomenal character.
