Details of the Next “Inner West Council Philosophy Talk"

Title: "What is ‘Recognition’ and Why isn’t there Enough of it?"

Speaker: Dr Heikki Ikäheimo (UNSW)

Abstract:
Everyone knows how good it can feel to receive, and how painful it is to be left without adequate recognition from others. We expect that others ‘recognise’ our presence in the shared social space, we expect ‘recognition’ for our work or contributions to the good of others, and we expect that others duly ‘recognise’ our rights. This talk will look into what exactly recognition is, what makes it so important, and why there is often reluctance to grant it.
