Cognitive impairment and the moral imperative of equal social  
statusPhilosophical debate about cognitive impairment has almost entirely  
focussed on the issue of the moral status of human beings with 'serious'  
or 'profound' cognitive impairments. I argue that the issue of moral status  
is far less important than philosophers have assumed. Rather, social status  
hierarchies lie at the heart of the widespread maltreatment of people with  
cognitive impairments. I therefore defend the moral importance of equal  
social status for all adult human beings, partly via an analysis of Sally  
Haslanger's account of ideology.
