"New Directions on the Emergence and Maintenance of Individuality"

Since the publication of the Major Transitions in Evolution by Maynard Smith and Szathmáry in the mid 90s, the topic of the emergence of individuality in evolution has gained attention. Current evolutionary theory does not permit to account how and why lower-level individuals, such as cells, band together and form higher-level individuals, such as multicellular organisms. This interdisciplinary workshop will explore new directions in this area.
