*BLACKHEATH PHILOSOPHY FORUM*
blackheathphilosophy.org <http://www.blackheathphilosophy.org>
**
*4pm Saturday May 7*
*THEME 2: ETHICS, HAPPINESS AND HUMAN FLOURISHING*
**
*“Ethical theory and the value of friendship”*
**
*Our speaker, Justin Oakley, Associate Professor of Philosophy at Monash
University, *will postulate that on the face of it an ethical theory
like Utilitarianism, that requires us to be impartial between people,
has difficulties in accommodating the value of friendship. Recent
Utilitarians have given both psychological and empirical arguments
claiming to justify the place of friendship within a life governed by
Utilitarian principles. He will consider the plausibility of these
Utilitarian arguments for the role of friendship in a good life.
**
*Come and join us for a stimulating talk and lively discussion *at the
Hall at the Blackheath Neighbourhood Centre, cnr Gardiner Crescent & the
Great Western Highway, 4pm-6pm, followed by informal discussion at the
pub.Admission $10 includes a big afternoon tea before question time.
Hall is heated.All welcome!**
