[cid:image003.jpg at 01D18454.F78D58D0]The Philosophy group of Western Sydney University in collaboration with the State Library of NSW, ABC Radio National and Fordham University Press are inviting you to this year's opening of Thinking Out Loud: The Sydney Lectures in Philosophy and Society.

Speaker: Thomas Keenan
Topic: Claiming Human Rights

Human rights are, above all, claims. Before and after they are inscribed in laws and conventions, protests and pamphlets, they are claims addressed by us, to us, and about us. This rhetorical character of rights claims helps us understand how they succeed or fail. The lectures will ground the human rights claims in a series of examples from the front pages and front lines of today's struggles.

Dr Jessica Whyte (Western Sydney University) will be responding to the lectures.


The lecture series will be opened by Julian Burnside QC.

Opening on Monday, April 4
Reception starting at 5pm
Lecture 5.30 pm to 7.30 pm
