THE SOCIALITY OF PERSONHOOD

A symposium at the School of Humanities and Languages, UNSW Australia, Sydney, February 18-19, 2016

Persons only exist in plural; persons are genetically and constitutively dependent on other persons; persons cannot be thought of in abstraction from social structures, roles and institutions. These are familiar thoughts, and not very new. The general idea of the constitutive sociality, or relationality, of personhood can be traced back at least to classical German philosophy, Fichte, Hegel and others. And yet, systematic theories of personhood as relational are a relatively new phenomenon. This symposium looks into the sociality or relationality of personhood from both contemporary and historical perspectives, and inquires into ontological, ethical and political questions concerning the concept of personhood, as well as challenges to it.
